Where Hope Begins

For homeless people in need, hope begins at Homeless Solutions, Inc.  We are a private, nonprofit organization with over 25 years of experience in meeting the needs of our community’s homeless and working poor.  Our mission is to offer shelter, supportive services, and affordable housing to homeless and low income people.  HSI provides outreach services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing to families and individuals from the Morris County area.  In 2010, we sheltered, housed and outreached to nearly 700 people.  One-third of those we house are children.

The Shelter

The HSI shelter provides 85 beds and supports four separate programs – the Family Program, the Single Women’s Program, the Single Men’s Program, and the Safe Haven Program.  Guests in all programs participate in mandatory courses and seminars on topics including money management, apartment hunting, healthy diet and exercise. Classes on parenting, GED preparation, and resume writing are also offered.  HSI also provides case management services to our guests including linkages to medical care, child care, and transportation.

Transitional Housing Program

HSI has ten apartments available in our Transitional Housing facility to families who are making the move to self-sufficiency.  Trained staff members provide structured support to reinforce skills needed for independent living, and guests participate in similar courses and seminars to those offered in our shelter.

Headquarters Development: Permanent, Supportive Housing Development

In 2004, HSI opened the 15-unit Jean Street Apartments, NJ’s first permanent, supportive housing for families. We currently own and manage 39 units of permanent, supportive family housing and we’re working to complete an additional 10 units by summer of 2011 and to begin construction on another 6 units by year’s end.  These apartments are home to retail workers, waitresses, office clerks, and child care workers – people who are working, paying rent, and contributing to their communities.

In addition to being affordable, our apartments are “supportive” – providing tenants with additional tools and support to help them increase their self-sufficiency.

HSI’s deliberate efforts have also made us a leader in green building.  Our developments utilize practices, materials, systems and education that reduce the environmental impact of projects during construction and throughout their operation.  The double bottom line is that our tenants benefit by having healthier homes and lower utility bills from all the energy-efficient features.
