Work of the Deacons

What is a Deacon?

A Deacon assists the ministers in providing pastoral care for members of the congregation. It is a great privilege to be a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon.

What Is The Work of the Deacons?

Much of the work of a Deacon is done behind the scenes. The Deacons are responsible for:

  • Making sure that everything is ready for communion and cleaned up afterwards.
  • Delivering flowers with a short visit to people who are ill, have lost a loved one, or have other special needs.
  • Managing the Persons In Need (PIN) fund
  • Cooking and serving dinner to the residents of the Richmond Fellowship one or two times a year
  • Assisting with the Blood Drive
  • Preparing and serving the Easter Breakfast (every other year)
  • Co-ordinating the local Meals On Wheels ministry
  • Arranging receptions after funeral/memorial servIces
  • Providing emergency drivers for doctor visits and treatments
  • Arranging for Coffee Hour Hosts
  • Taking the ladies from the Mt. Kemble Home in Morristown on a fall foliage drive
  • Supporting the pastors in serving communion to shut-ins, and
  • Providing our senior pastor with a group of dedicated men and women on whom he can call for anything that needs to be taken care of in the church and community.

Are There Volunteer Opportunities?

Members of the congregation can help many ways:

  • Coffee hour hosts are needed each week.
  • Our nursery caregiver can use assistance on Sunday mornings
  • Drivers are needed both for Meals on Wheels and for emergency situations
