Description of Program:
The Community Soup Kitchen (CSK) serves 100-160 men, women, and children a hot noon-time meal 365 days a year. Sandwichs and fruit are also given to guests to take away for dinner. Meals are provided for homeless and working poor individuals from Morris County. CSK also provides emergency food, information, and referral to social service agencies, medical consultation by a nurse of the VNA (Visiting Nurses Association) and access to mental health services. This effort is supported and run by 33 congregations from the greater Morristown area.
How the ministry has helped people in need
One young man who suffered from epilepsy became destitute when he could not find a job. He wandered for several years around the country aimlessly. He eventually made his way to Morristown. The Morristown police came to know him because he was having seizures on the streets. They directed him to Homeless Solutions and the CSK. Through the CSK he met a caseworker that helped him turn his life around. He felt the Morristown community cared about him. Now, he is working part-time at a pizza restaurant, and has a much more positive outlook on life.
