In 1809, a Sunday School was established near the site of what is now the First Presbyterian Church of New Vernon. The congregation itself was organized some 24 years later, when 33 residents of the community called the Reverend Ulrich Maynard as their first pastor in June 1833. Within a year the church was built, and it has been in continuous use ever since.
Part of our Christian Education Building was originally constructed as a Sunday School Chapel in the early years of the 20 th century. In the 1950s, classrooms, offices and meeting rooms were added, tripling its size. In 1981, an extensive organ chamber was added to the rear of the church to permit the installation of a 22-rank Casavant pipe organ. Both buildings have undergone extensive renovation recently. In 2005, the education building was renamed the George E. Chorba Fellowship Hall, in honor of Dr. Chorba's 37 year pastorate here.
